Max Mittry surges to first Placerville Winged Sprint Car win during Forni-Humphreys Classic
Redding’s Max Mittry got by Colby Copeland during a lap 15 restart and led the remaining distance to score the $10,085 grand prize at the Forni-Humphreys Classic on Saturday.
The triumph marked Mittry’s first career Winged Sprint Car victory at Placerville Speedway and came aboard the familiar Mittry Construction No. 2xm Sprinter. When all was settled, Justyn Cox also wrapped up his initial Placerville Speedway championship for Josh Bates Racing.
Oakley’s Nick Baldwin won his ninth Red Hawk Casino Pure Stock feature of the season and locked up his eighth career track championship. Randy Shafer claimed his initial Kings Meats Ltd. Late Model triumph while Rod Oliver secured his second consecutive title.
With the Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks, it was Howard Miller getting the win while Noah LaPoint won the war for his first track championship.
The 30-lap Thompson’s Family of Dealerships Winged 360 Sprint Car feature began with pole sitter Colby Copeland jumping into the lead. Things were fast and furious early on, as the opening 15-laps clicked off caution free.
The well-prepared quarter mile lent itself to outstanding racing in all four divisions during the Forni-Humphreys Classic. Mittry hounded Copeland over the opening stages and made his move on the lap-15 double file restart.
Mittry blasted to the outside of the speedway and charged into the lead with a picture-perfect move. After that the 20-year-old held the field at bay as drivers battled for position behind him. Mittry pounded the high side and went on to cross the Ed Entz checkered flag for his first Winged score at Placerville Speedway.
Copeland finished in the second spot with Placerville’s Shane Hopkins continuing his ultra-consistent campaign by rounding out the podium. Tanner Carrick and Hard Charger Michael Sellers completed the top five in an entertaining main event.
Finishing sixth through 10th were Cole Croft, champion Justyn Cox, Austin Wood, Andy Forsberg and Jake Morgan. A total of 31 cars competed on Saturday during the final Thompson’s Family of Dealerships Sprint Car main event.
The Red Hawk Resort + Casino Pure Stocks put on another excellent feature Saturday night. Nick Baldwin moved out front on lap four but had to deal with the relentless pressure from Rio Linda’s Ryan Peter.
Baldwin hung tough for his 48th career Placerville Speedway triumph to lock up title number eight. He has now captured the last seven Pure Stock championships. Peter, Tyler Lightfoot, Jason Ramos and Matt Tilford comprised the top five.
Vacaville’s Randy Shafer carved his way into the lead of the Kings Meats Ltd. Late Model main event on lap eight and led the remaining distance to get his first Placerville win.
All eyes were locked on Ray Trimble who had a wounded race car and came from the work area back to a runner up finish. Paul Gugliomoni, champion Rod Oliver and Adam Starkey finished third through fifth respectively.
The Mountain Democrat Mini Trucks saw a back-and-forth main event all race long. The trucks battled tooth and nail, with contact at times over the course of the 25-lap contest.
Brycen Bragg looked to bring home his second career win however, when coming by for the white flag contact ensued between himself and Howard Miller. Bragg ended up flipping to bring out a red flag, but he was luckily okay.
H. Miller led the final two circuits for victory over Mike Miller, Kevin Jinkerson, Brian Tremblay and Emmett Fanning.
That puts a wrap on the Berco Building Materials championship point campaign. Placerville Speedway finishes up the season with multiple special events, including the Malicious Monster Truck Insanity Tour on September 25th and 26th.
