PLACERVILLE, CA (6-17-13) - After a week off to allow for the El Dorado County Fair, four divisions of auto racing will return to Placerville Speedway this Saturday night, June 22 for the seventh round of the 2013 Red Hawk Casino - Hoosier Racing Tires - Coors Light Championship racing season.
Winged sprint cars, late models and pure stocks will resume their battles for the championship crown. The three track regulars will be joined by the Wingless Sprint Cars of the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Car Series. This event marks the first appearance of the traveling series that brings the best wingless drivers of Northern California to various tracks throughout the season in a traveling championship tour.
It is routine when racing resumes following the annual fair break at Placerville Speedway that the chase for the coveted track championships heats up to a new high. Such will undoubtedly be the case starting this Saturday night as the battles for the respective titles are hotter than ever.
In the winged sprint car division, defending four time Placerville Speedway champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn continues to sit on top of the point standings. Although he tops the roster, Forsberg and his usually dominant F&F Racing Team have been on a drought so far this season in the way of victories at the track they call home. Last year at this time, Forsberg had already claimed three feature wins in the championship series.
Saturday night, Forsberg will be looking to bring his dry spell to an end in hopes of holding off Placerville's own Andy Gregg. Gregg has captured four feature wins this season, three of them in the championship campaign where he is now just two points behind Forsberg entering Saturday's race. Jimmy Trulli of Placerville is well in the hunt as well, sitting in third wit 23 point between him and the pointer leader. Mason Moore of Princeton is fourth overall ahead of Calistoga's Mike Benson who completes the top five.
In the Limited Late Model Division, defending track champion Matt Micheli of Live Oak is once again feeling the pressure of 2012 Rookie of the Year and former Pure Stock Champion Tom Tilford. Although Tilford is still looking for his first win in this division compared to Micheli's three victories, he has kept up with Micheli in the form of top five finishes overall and the duo returns to the track this week in a dead heat for the point lead.
Sitting behind the tied duo is Doug Grandboise of Jackson who is only 14-points out of the lead and in the hunt for the title. Ken Micheli of Live Oak is in fourth, 27-points back. Duane Zeider of Paradise completes the top five in this division.
In the Pure Stock division, Galt's Les Friend recently won his fourth series victory. Friend sits in the point lead with a 22 point advantage over Chris Van Roekel of Grass Valley. Scott Grunert of Woodland is third followed by veteran driver Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado in fourth with Tim Mack of El Dorado rounding out the top five.
In the traveling Hunt Magnetos Wingless Series Joe Stornetta is currently leading the series point standings. Scott Hall is just two points back in second place over Rowdy McClenon in third. Terry Schank Jr. is fourth followed by Sparky Howard. This series has competed in three traveling events so far this season that consists of nine events at four different California tracks.
The 2013 Championship Racing Season at Placerville Speedway is presented in part by Red Hawk Casino, Hoosier Tires and Coors Light in conjunction with the Mountain Democrat, Thompson's Auto Centers, ADCO Driveline, Riebes Auto Parts and Stymeist Auto Body Collision Repair.
The grandstands will open at 5 p.m. on Saturday night with ADCO Driveline Qualifying starting at 6:30. Tickets will be available at that time Adult tickets will be $14, Juniors and Seniors will be $12, Children $6.
