PLACERVILLE, CA (6-30-12) - The combination of patriotism and auto racing comes together in grand fashion this Wednesday, July 4th as Placerville Speedway hosts its highest paying Independence Day event in its 47 year history with the inaugural Tiner Family Classic featuring the combination of the competitive Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series and a giant pyrotechnics display over the quarter-mile bullring at the El Dorado County Faigrounds.
When it comes to open wheel racing, the last name Tiner is a stalemate in Northern California. This Wednesday, this successful racing family will celebrate 50 years of racing as they present with one of the season's biggest nights at Placerville Speedway as well as the traveling Civil War Sprint Car Series.
"This race is going to be really special to me as my entire family will be there," said Steven Tiner of Visalia, the most current racing talent to come from the Rio Linda based family. "We have raced as a family our whole life and it's been my bonding time with my family through the years. We are Tiners, we win together and lose together and this Wednesday will be a winning night for everyone that comes to Placerville Speedway."
Over the last several months, Tiner has been hard at work putting together a race that will pay tribute to the many generations of his family that have graced the high banks of Placerville, including former track champion Randy Tiner who is returning to the seat of a sprint car for the first time in several years for this special race that will pay an impressive $4000 to win and a $500 bonus to the fast qualifier.
"Last year on the Fourth of July I sat with my Grandpa and watched the B main at Placerville. Seeing the look on his face as he watches his kids and grandkids continue this tradition is priceless. I told him what I wanted to do with a special race as he shared many memories of his days behind the wheel at Placerville. That night I won the main event and Brad Sweet finished second in my uncle Rodney's car. It made me so happy to see him proud of us and now we want to make it a special race for years to come."
Over the last few months, Tiner has been busy recruiting investors for his family tribute race. In addition to then victory payout, which is double the regular amount and the fast time bounty, numerous products will be given away throughout the evening to competing drivers and the winner of each heat race and the B feature will receive a $50 bonus and a commemorative plaque for this highly anticipated event. The added winnings are expected to bring record car counts to Placerville Speedway and the evening concludes with a giant fireworks display presented in conjunction with the annual Family Blast.
"This will be a night nobody wants to miss at Placerville, the July Fourth crowd at that speedway is always incredible," added Tiner. "It will be really special to see Randy back in a sprint car at Placerville. He's been testing a couple of times recently and looking really good."
Due to the fireworks display, Wednesday's races will start one hour earlier than normal on Wednesday night. The grandstands will open at 4 p.m. with qualifying starting at 5:30. An early arrival to the speedway is recommended as routinely the holiday event sells out early and additional attendance is expected do to the high caliber of this event and the return of Tiner who was always a fan favorite here.
