PLACERVILLE, CA (5-16-12) - The contingent for the 2012 Placerville Speedway winged sprint car championship is beginning to take stellar form. This Saturday night a trio of decorated champions, an up and coming lady racer and a local favorite will take to the track as the top five point runners for the fifth segment of the Fast and Furious Dirt Track Racing Season at Placerville Speedway presented by Red Hawk Casino, Hoosier Tires West and Coors Light.
Saturday's event will mark the final night of racing at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds prior to the break for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. The Winged 360 Sprint Cars will lead the venue roster along with the fire breathing Limited Late Models and the always entertaining and competitive Pure Stocks, Placerville Speedway's grassroots and locally populated division. In the Winged Sprint Cars, Elk Grove's Greg DeCaires continues to lead the championship point standings as he eyes a return to the title throne once again. DeCaires is a 2006 and 2007 Placerville Speedway track champion. DeCaires is a California triple crown champion with titles not only at Placerville but in the Civil War Series and Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. The driver known as "The Catfish" is currently six points ahead of the driver known as "Mr. Excitement" in Northern California, Andy Forsberg of Auburn, the defending three time Placerville Speedway champion with additional titles in the Civil War Series and Silver Dollar Speedway. Sitting in third is another one of Northern California's well known champions who is now on of Placerville Speedway's locals and considered a member of what is known as the "Placerville Posse," Stephen Allard of Chico. A 2007 Silver Dollar Speedway Champion, Allard is contesting for the Placerville title this season driving the Scott Russell and Kami Arnold owned #14. The Cameron Park resident is rapidly closing in on the leaders, sitting 24-points out of the lead in third place. Currently tied for the third position is Placerville's only lady racer in the sprint car division, Nicole Miller of Elk Grove. In the last two seasons, Miller has become one of the areas competitive drivers and is closing in on the point lead as well at Placerville, gaining two positions last Saturday night. Local favorite Justin Johnson of Shingle Springs rounds out the top five in this division. Johnson is having a solid season thus far. The former track Rookie of the Year is trailed by fellow locals Jimmy Trulli and James Sweeney of Placerville. In the Limited Late Model Division, Matt Micheli of Live Oak continues to lead the point standings. Micheli, a three time feature event winner, is now 23-points ahead of former champion Marek Bernert of Orangevale. Jay Norton of Cameron Park is third, tied with Bernert. Jason Englund of Citrus Heights is fourth followed by Ken Micheli of Live Oak. In Pure Stock competition, look for Orangevale's Matt Tilford to attempt to maintain his undefeated status at Placerville. Tilford is a four time feature event winner already this season and holds an 11-point advantage towards the title over former champion Chris Curtiss of Placerville. Scott Grunert of Woodland is third, 20 points from the leader. Dominic Stone of Folsom is fourth followed by Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado who rounds out the top five, 29-points from the lead. Adult tickets are $13 for Saturday and available at the track box office. Seniors and Juniors are $11 while Children are $6. Those five and under will be admitted free.
