PLACERVILLE, CA (8-8-09) - An action packed night featured five divisions of racing at ASA Sanctioned Placerville Speedway Saturday night with two repeat winners and three new faces in victory lane. The Bay Cities Racing Association Midgets were on hand and nationally recognized open wheel star Brad Kuhn of Avon, Indiana came into town to steal the local victory. Kuhn was joined in victory lane by fellow BCRA competitor Jason Sneep of Fremont in the midget lites.
Former champion Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights scored his sixth win of the year in the Pure Stock division. Brandon Davis of Rohnert Park won the wingless sprint car feature and Dillon Silverman of Chico was the winner in the Capitol City Midgets division. In the BCRA Midget division, Kuhn was aboard one of two powerful midgets owned by Mike and Lori Sala. USAC star Robbie Flock was aboard the second team car and the two open wheel veterans gave fans their money's worth as they muscled their way around the Placerville bullring to take the two top spots.
"It's a pleasure to win a race for Mike and Lori Sala here tonight, this is a fast little track and a lot of fun," said Kuhn. "As a driver there are certain car owners you work for that you really want to give them a win and this is one of them. They always put together a great car and that was the case here tonight. We had a little trouble in qualifying with second place so I wanted to make sure we came home with a win." Flock has many victories to name, including those at Placerville. Saturday night he saw the lead a few times throughout the event but settled for second in his usual humble fashion.
Silverman finished 12th in the field as the Capital City Midgets raced within the BCRA feature Saturday night. Silverman is the current CCM point leader and was the winner of his class on Saturday night. In the Midget Lite division, Sneep ended up winning his second straight win at Placerville. Just last week Sneep scored a winged victory aboard his Lopez Motorsports machine. Saturday night he charged up from the seventh position to take the lead from teammate Doug Nunes on the 17th lap. The two dueled for the top position for the final three laps of the race where the order was Sneep, Nunes, Justin Grant and Pete Paulson.
At the finish line Davis was followed by Placerville's James Sweeney who was aboard Gary Lewis' car for the night. Mackay finished in third followed by Floyd Alvis, Rick Sharp and Placerville's Dave Angus who pulled out of semi-retirement to finish just out of the top five. The Pure Stock division returned to Placerville Speedway Saturday to resume their Red Hawk Casino championship title campaign. Tilford is the current point leader and has now overtaken former champion Marek Bernert as the winningest Pure Stock driver in history at Placerville.
Tilford started Saturday's event in fifth position and charged into second place as early as the end of the first lap. One lap later he overtook early race leader Tom Grady Sr. of El Dorado. Once in front, Tilford was then joined by Bartlett in second place and the two drivers kept the fans on the edge of their seats for the entire event as they raced bumper to bumper and door to door all the way to the finish line. Bartlett finished in second followed by Rick Grunert of Woodland, John Hollowhornbear of Shingle Springs and Eddie Gardner of Sacramento. "It feels pretty awesome to be here tonight and know I beat my good friend Marek's record for wins," said Tilford. "We have a lot of people here tonight who support us and its always great to win on a night like this. I just want to thank all my sponsors for their support, my family, everyone." Racing returns to Placerville Speedway next Saturday with Kid's Night on Saturday and the Annual Police Officers Association Destruction Derby on Sunday. Prior to the upcoming big weekend, race fans are invited to Placerville Speedway Pizza Night at Round Table Pizza in Cameron Park, in the Safeway shopping center this Tuesday night. Bring your ticket stubs from the races at Placerville Speedway to get 15 percent off your regular order or free soda with the Tuesday night buffet. The event will feature several of Placerville's top drivers including Tilford, John Hollowhornbear, the Fonseca Midget Lite Team of Pete Paulson and Chris Glass and the Sprint Car team of Justin Johnson. The event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Baskin Robbins, next door to Round Table will be offering their "Dollar Scoop Night" during the event as well.
