PLACERVILLE, CA (6-6-09) - The seventh Red Hawk Casino, Hoosier Racing Tires Championship point race of the season brought four repeat winners to victory lane at the ASA Racing Sanctioned Placerville Speedway Saturday night.
Placerville's own C.J. Humphreys drove to his second win of the year in the winged sprint cars while Chico's Heather Bartlett scored her second victory in the Pure Stock class, celebrating with her father Jerry who won his fourth Late Model-Pro Stock feature event of the year. The three track regulars were joined by Brett Barstow of Ballico who posted his second win of the year in the Dwarf Car feature. Saturday's sprint car feature began with the local duo of Jimmy Trulli from Diamond Springs and Humphreys on the front row. At the waving of the green flag Trulli powered into a healthy lead while third place starter Scott Kinney of Citrus Heights drove into the second position ahead of Humphreys. Trulli distanced himself from the field until the 17th lap when he exited the fourth turn as mechanical woes in the rear end of his #33 sprint car ended his strong run. Kinney assumed the lead and appeared to be on his way to his first season win until the 21st lap when Humphreys made a strong run down the backstretch to eventually overtake Kinney. "Earlier tonight I was sitting up there with Jimmy Trulli and Andy Gregg and we were talking about the track tonight," said Humphreys. "It was obvious the high side was the fastest line tonight but Jimmy got the jump on me at the start. Scott was fast down low and it took a good run to finally catch him." Kinney finished in second place while Gregg was the McDonald's Hard Charger of the night, driving from 10th to third. Point leader Colby Wiesz of Colfax was fourth followed by Placerville's Scott Russell and Justin Johnson of Shingle Springs. Andy Forsberg of Auburn was the Durango's Mexican Restaurant Fast Qualifier with a lap time of 10:324.
Saturday victory was Sunday drive, it was a door rubbing, paint trading slugfest between two veteran champions from start to finish. Starting in the third position, Bartlett drove into the lead on the second lap, overtaking early leader Eddie Gardner of Sacramento. Once in front she was joined by her arch rival Tilford, a three time winner here who held the point lead by one digit entering Saturday's event. At the 12th lap the duo had broken away from the field in one of the closest battles for the lead all year. Racing into lapped traffic the race that had been clean took a more aggressive approach. As Bartlett drove into lapped traffic he bright pink #99 slid slightly sideways and Tilford took advantage of it as his right front fender collided with Bartlett's left rear, forcing her to back off to gain control while Tilford charged into the lead and brought the crowd to their feet. Once in front, Tilford drove to a pair of car lengths over Bartlett until the 15th lap when she muscled her way into the lead once again within lapped traffic, Tilford going as far as climbing the back stretch hillside in an attempt to get past the traffic. Once again the crowd went into a frenzy as they love Placerville's newest boy vs. girl rivalry. For the final five laps the battle continued between the two as they rubbed doors lap after lap down the back stretch. In the final turns of the final lap Tilford gave it everything he had. Bartlett took the low line to duck below the traffic while Tilford went high. Again, spectators on their feet to see the outcome. As they traveled through the fourth turn Bartlett maintained her lead as Tilford slid off the track surface and went up in smoke. At the line it was Bartlett becoming the only two time female pure stock winner in Placerville history. Tilford finished in second followed by Keith Fournier of Placerville and Gardner.
In the Late Model Pro Stock feature event, Jerry Bartlett took the lead from Placerville's Forryst Carnett on the fourth lap of the event to drive to his fourth win of the season to celebrate alongside his daughter for the second time this season. Bartlett held off point leader Dan Brown Jr. for the entire 15-lap affair. Brown finished in second followed by Placerville's John Krehbiel who was the McDonald's hard charger of the night advancing from seventh. Jay Norton of Shingle Springs was fourth followed by Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado. Carnett was the Cold Springs Church Hard Luck Award recipient of the night after striking the wall on the fourth lap and finishing 8th.
In the Nor Cal Dwarf Car feature event, Barstow drove from 8th to first and earned both the Carl's Jr. Victory lane award and the McDonalds Hard charger award of the night. He was followed across the line by Brian Quilty, Neil Stinson, Kevin Bender and Ryan Winter. Racing resumes this Saturday night at Placerville with the final night of action before a two week break for the El Dorado County Fair. For further information visit www.placervillespeedway.com. |
